Online Order Notifications

Admin

Use this page to make the register chime, print a ticket, or both, when a new online order (storefront or WooCommerce) comes in. For what the cashier sees, see Online Order Alerts & Tickets (POS).

Quick steps

  1. Go to Settings, click Edit Settings, and open the Operations tab.
  2. Find the Online Order Notifications section.
  3. Make sure Play a sound when a new online order arrives is ticked. Tick Keep chiming until the order is opened if orders get missed at busy times.
  4. To print a ticket too, pick Label printer, Receipt printer or Both label + receipt under Auto-print a ticket on new orders.
  5. With more than one till, pick the register by your packing counter under Print from this register.
  6. Click Update Settings.
Browser audio needs one tap

In a web browser, tap the POS screen once after it loads so the chime can play. The iPad and Android app doesn't need this.

Common questions

Do WooCommerce orders print a ticket? No. WooCommerce orders chime, but only storefront orders print a ticket.

The ticket doesn't print. The register you picked needs the matching label or receipt printer set up on it. See Registers.

Which registers chime? Every register with the POS open. Only printing is limited to the register you pick.

Can food and cannabis orders sound different? Yes. Under Per-vertical sounds (optional), click + Add group, name it, pick a sound and its categories or revenue centers.

Where to Find These Settings

  1. Log in to the Admin Panel as an admin.
  2. Go to Settings → Edit Settings and click the Operations tab.
  3. Find the Online Order Notifications section.
  4. Adjust the options below, then click Update Settings at the bottom of the page.
Storefront and WooCommerce

The POS checks for new orders about every 15 seconds while it's open. The chime plays for both storefront and WooCommerce orders. The auto-printed ticket is for storefront orders only. WooCommerce orders chime but don't print a ticket.

The Arrival Chime

SettingWhat it does
Play a sound when a new online order arrivesTurns the chime on or off. It's on by default.
Keep chiming until the order is openedPlays the chime again every 20 seconds until someone opens the Online Orders tab on the POS. Good for busy periods.
VolumeSlide left for quieter, right for louder.

The chime plays on every register that has the POS open, so staff hear it at any till.

Browser audio needs one tap

Web browsers block sound until someone interacts with the page. On the browser version of the POS, tap the screen once after loading so the chime can play. The Brother POS iPad/Android app doesn't need this tap.

Auto-Print a Ticket

Brother POS can print a ticket the moment a storefront order arrives. The print itself works as a silent alert.

Choose the printer under Auto-print a ticket on new orders. It's Off by default.

OptionWhat prints
OffNothing. The chime can still play.
Label printerA label
Receipt printerA receipt-style ticket
Both label + receiptOne of each

Receipt ticket: "NEW ONLINE ORDER", then the customer's name and phone, the total, and the order number. It also shows pickup, delivery or mail order, the delivery address, any scheduled time, when the order was received, and the items.

Label (Zebra and similar label printers): A compact bag label with pickup, delivery or mail order, the customer's name and phone, the address, the total, and the order number. The item list is left off.

A printer must be set up on the register

The ticket prints on the label or receipt printer set up on the register. If the register has no printer for the option you chose, nothing prints. See Registers.

Designated Print Register

In a store with several registers, you usually want the ticket to print at one station, not at every till.

Under Print from this register, choose:

  • Any register (single-register stores) — the ticket prints on any register that has the POS open. This is best for single-till shops.
  • A specific register — only that register prints the ticket.

Either way, the chime still sounds on all registers. Only printing is limited to the chosen register.

Pick the station nearest your pack area

Choose the register at your pickup or packing counter, so the ticket prints where staff put the order together.

More detail: per-vertical sounds

Per-Vertical Sounds (Optional)

If you sell more than one kind of product, you can play a different chime depending on what was ordered. For example, food orders could get one sound and cannabis orders another. Leave this empty to use one chime for everything.

Setting it up

  1. Under Per-vertical sounds (optional), click + Add group.
  2. Give the group a name (e.g. "Food") and choose its sound. Click ▶ to hear it.
  3. Select the Categories and/or Revenue centers that belong to the group.
  4. Repeat for each kind of product, then click Update Settings.

A group with no categories or revenue centers selected isn't saved.

Which sound plays

  • If an order's items match one group, that group's sound plays.
  • If an order has items from two or more groups, the Mixed order sound plays. If that's left on Default chime, the classic chime plays.
  • If nothing matches, or no groups are set up, the default chime plays.

The repeat chime from Keep chiming until the order is opened plays the same sound as the waiting orders.

More detail: best practices

Best Practices

  1. Turn on repeat mode for busy stores so an order can't sit unnoticed during a rush.
  2. Pick one print register in stores with several tills to avoid duplicate tickets.
  3. Test the printer on that register before relying on auto-print.
  4. Use per-vertical sounds only if you sell clearly separate lines (e.g. food and cannabis). Otherwise one chime is simpler for staff.
