Set Up Your Printer
Which printers work, and how they connect, depends on what your register runs on. Find your device below, then follow the link for the printer you have.
First, for every setup: turn printing on for the store. In the admin, go to Settings → Edit Settings → Hardware & System, tick Enable Receipt Printing and/or Enable Label Printing, and click Update Settings. Until you do, the printer settings don't appear anywhere.
1. What runs your register?
| Your register is… | Receipts | Labels | Set it up in |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Windows computer (web browser) | ✅ through the Printer Bridge | ✅ through the Printer Bridge | Printer Bridge, then the register's settings |
| A Linux computer (web browser) | ✅ through the Printer Bridge | ✅ through the Printer Bridge | Printer Bridge, then the register's settings |
| The iPad app | ✅ network or Bluetooth | ✅ network, or a Brother QL-810W | The gear (Settings) on the iPad |
| The Android app (including PAX) | ✅ network, Bluetooth or the built-in printer | ✅ network, Brother QL-810W, or Zebra Bluetooth | The gear (Settings) on the tablet |
| A Mac | ❌ | ❌ | — |
| A tablet in a web browser (not the app) | ❌ | ❌ | — |
The register works in a browser on a Mac, but the Printer Bridge only runs on Windows and Linux, so a Mac can't print receipts or labels or open a cash drawer. A tablet using the register in its web browser can't reach printers either. Use the iPad or Android app, or a Windows or Linux computer.
2. Receipt printers
On a Windows or Linux computer
| Printer | Works? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Epson TM-m30II (recommended) and other receipt printers that use Epson's commands (most thermal printers) | ✅ | Plug it in by USB (or install it on the computer) and pick it in the Printer Bridge. |
| Star (TSP100, TSP143 and others) | ✅ Linux — full receipts · ⚠️ Windows — plain text only | Linux: the bridge recognizes a Star on your network by itself. Windows: install Star's Windows driver and tick Use Windows Driver (for Star/network printers) in the Printer Bridge; receipts print as plain text, without bold text, the logo or barcodes. For a Star on Windows, the iPad or Android app gives full receipts. |
Then switch the printer on for the register — see Receipt Printers.
In the iPad or Android app
| Printer | iPad | Android | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epson TM-m30II and other network receipt printers | ✅ | ✅ | Connect it to the same network as the tablet. In the gear (Settings), Receipt Printer (Bluetooth / Network), tap Search for Receipt Printers and pick it, or type its IP address. |
| Star (network or Bluetooth) | ✅ | ✅ | Same section — the search finds it. |
| Other Bluetooth receipt printers (for example Munbyn) | ⚠️ only Bluetooth Low Energy models | ✅ | Turn it on near the tablet and pick it from Search for Receipt Printers in the same section. On an iPad, check with us before buying a Bluetooth printer. |
| PAX terminal's built-in printer | — | ✅ | Prints by itself on a PAX terminal. |
Details: Receipt Printers.
Cash drawer
The cash drawer plugs into the receipt printer (the DK port) and opens when the printer tells it to — so it works wherever the receipt printer works. See Cash Drawers.
3. Label printers
| Printer | Windows or Linux computer | iPad app | Android app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zebra | ✅ USB, through the Printer Bridge | ✅ on your network | ✅ on your network, or Bluetooth |
| Munbyn and other TSPL label printers | ✅ USB, through the Printer Bridge | ✅ on your network | ✅ on your network |
| Brother QL-810W | ✅ USB, through the Printer Bridge | ✅ over Wi-Fi | ✅ over Wi-Fi |
Pick the printer's type (Zebra, Munbyn, Brother and so on) in the label printer settings, so labels are sent in the language that printer understands. Details: Label Printers · Brother QL-810W.
Testing
- Computer: the setup wizard's Hardware step tests the receipt printer, label printer (choose the printer's type next to the Test button) and cash drawer through the Printer Bridge.
- iPad or Android app: use Test Print in the gear (Settings) next to each printer.
If something doesn't print, see Printer Issues.
