Terpenes, Effects & Flavors
Brother POS lets you attach rich attribute data to cannabis products: terpenes, effects, flavors, and medical benefits. These attributes help budtenders make informed recommendations and allow customers to search for products by the experience they are looking for rather than just by strain name.

These features are only available when Cannabis Features are enabled in your store settings. Individual attribute categories (terpenes, effects, flavors, medical benefits) can be shown or hidden via the feature flags in Settings > Edit Settings > Products & Inventory tab.
Overview of Attribute Types
| Attribute | Purpose | Example Values |
|---|---|---|
| Terpenes | Aromatic compounds that influence flavor and effects | Myrcene, Limonene, Caryophyllene, Pinene, Linalool |
| Effects | Expected experiential outcomes | Relaxed, Euphoric, Creative, Sleepy, Focused, Uplifted |
| Flavors | Taste and aroma descriptors | Berry, Citrus, Earthy, Pine, Sweet, Diesel, Mint |
| Medical Benefits | Potential therapeutic uses (informational only) | Pain Relief, Stress Relief, Insomnia, Appetite, Nausea |
Accessing Attribute Management
Each attribute type has its own separate page in the admin panel, accessible from the Cannabis section in the admin menu when cannabis features are enabled:
- Terpenes
- Effects
- Flavors
- Medical Benefits
These are not tabbed on a single page -- each is a dedicated, separate page.

- Enter the benefit name (e.g., "Muscle Spasms").
- Click Save.

Tagging Products with Attributes
There are two ways to tag products with terpenes, effects, flavors, and medical benefits:
From the Product Edit Page
- Navigate to Products and open a product.
- Scroll to the Cannabis Attributes section.
- Use the multi-select dropdowns for each attribute type.
- Select the relevant tags.
- Save the product.
Via the Strain Library
If you use the Strain Library, attributes can be auto-populated when you select a strain during product creation. The strain library is read-only -- you cannot edit strain definitions -- but selecting a strain pre-fills the product's terpene, effect, flavor, and medical benefit tags.
Products inherit attributes from their linked strain. You can override inherited attributes on individual products by editing the product directly. Product-level tags take precedence over strain-level tags.
How Attributes Appear on the POS
On the POS register, product detail cards display:
- Dominant Terpene -- Shown as a badge with the terpene name (if the Show Dominant Terpene feature flag is enabled).
- Effects -- Listed below the product name (if the Show Effects feature flag is enabled).
- Strain Type -- Displayed as a color-coded badge (Indica = purple, Sativa = orange, Hybrid = green).
- THC/CBD -- Shown as percentages (if the Show THC/CBD feature flag is enabled).
Budtenders can also search by attribute on the POS:
- Tap the search bar.
- Type an effect name (e.g., "Relaxed") or terpene name (e.g., "Myrcene").
- Products matching that attribute appear in the results.
Feature Flags for Attribute Display
Control which attributes are visible on the POS register via Settings > Edit Settings > Products & Inventory tab:
| Flag | Controls |
|---|---|
| Show THC/CBD | THC and CBD percentage display. |
| Show Strain Type | Indica/Sativa/Hybrid badge. |
| Show Effects | Effect tags on product cards. |
| Show Medical Benefits | Medical benefit tags. |
| Show Dominant Terpene | Terpene badge on product cards. |
Disabling a flag hides that attribute from the POS register but does not delete the data. You can re-enable it at any time.
Best Practices
- Be specific but concise -- "Pain Relief" is better than "Helps with chronic pain conditions." Tags should be short and scannable.
- Use consistent naming -- Do not create both "Relaxed" and "Relaxing." Pick one and use it everywhere.
- Tag thoroughly -- The more attribute data you provide, the better the search and filtering experience for budtenders and customers.
- Leverage strains -- Use the strain library to auto-populate attributes whenever possible. This ensures consistency across all products of the same strain.
- Audit periodically -- Remove unused attributes to keep the lists clean and manageable.
