Weight-Based Products

Cashier Manager Admin

Many cannabis and deli products are sold by weight rather than by unit. Brother POS handles weight-based products through a dedicated weight selection modal that appears when you tap one of these products in the product grid.

How Weight Products Work

When you tap a weight-based product, instead of adding it to the cart immediately, a Weight Selection Modal opens. This modal presents the available weight options and pricing, letting you select the exact amount the customer wants.

There are three pricing models for weight-based products:

ModelDescriptionExample
Weight presetsFixed weight options with individual prices1g = $10, 3.5g = $30, 7g = $55
Per-gram pricingSingle price per gram, any weight$8.50/g, customer buys 4.2g = $35.70
Tiered pricingQuality-tier matrix with prices per weight per tierAAAA 3.5g = $45, AAA 3.5g = $35

Weight Presets

Weight presets are the most common model for cannabis products. Each product has defined weight options with specific prices.

Selecting a Preset

  1. Tap the weight-based product in the product grid.
  2. The weight selection modal opens showing available presets as large, tappable buttons.
  3. Each preset button shows:
    • The preset name (e.g., "Eighth")
    • The weight (e.g., "3.5g")
    • The price (e.g., "$30.00")
  4. Tap a preset to add the product at that weight and price to the cart.

Standard Weight Presets

Cannabis dispensaries typically use these standard weights:

PresetWeightCommon Name
1g1 gramGram
3.5g3.5 gramsEighth (1/8 oz)
7g7 gramsQuarter (1/4 oz)
14g14 gramsHalf (1/2 oz)
28g28 gramsOunce (1 oz)
info

Your admin configures which weight presets are available and their prices in the admin panel. Not all products will offer all weights -- for example, a limited-edition strain might only be sold in 1g and 3.5g.

Presets with Zero Price

Presets that have a price of $0.00 are hidden from the POS automatically. These are typically placeholder entries in the pricing matrix that have not been configured yet.

Per-Gram Pricing

Some products are priced per gram without fixed presets. This is common for deli-style products or bulk items.

Selecting a Weight for Per-Gram Products

When a per-gram product is selected, the modal shows:

  1. Price per gram displayed prominently (e.g., "$8.50/g").
  2. A weight input field where you can type any weight in grams.
  3. A live price calculation that updates as you type (e.g., "4.2g = $35.70").
  4. Quick-select buttons for standard weights (1g, 3.5g, 7g, 14g, 28g) with calculated prices.

Entering a Custom Weight

  1. Tap the weight input field.
  2. Type the weight in grams (e.g., "4.2").
  3. The calculated price updates in real time next to the input.
  4. Tap Add or press Enter to add the item to the cart.

The input enforces minimum and maximum weight limits if configured on the product.

tip

Use the quick-select buttons for common weights to save time. They work the same as typing the weight -- they just fill in the value for you and add the item in one tap.

Quality Tier Pricing

Cannabis dispensaries using quality tiers (AA, AAA, AAAA, AAAA+) have pricing matrices that combine tier and weight to determine price.

How Tier Pricing Displays

When a tiered product is tapped:

  1. The weight selection modal shows only the weight presets that have non-zero prices in the tier's pricing matrix.
  2. Each preset button displays the tier-specific price for that weight.
  3. Presets that are not configured for the product's tier (or have $0 price) are hidden.
  4. Only presets marked as POS-visible are shown (admins can hide certain weights from the POS while keeping them for other channels).

Custom Weight Entry for Tiered Products

Some quality tiers allow custom weight entry in addition to standard presets. When this is enabled:

  1. An Enter custom weight button appears below the preset buttons.
  2. Tapping it reveals a weight input field.
  3. The minimum and maximum weights are derived from the pricing matrix (e.g., if the matrix covers 1g to 28g, those become the bounds).
  4. A Back to weights button returns to the preset buttons.
info

Custom weight entry for tiered products must be enabled per tier by an admin in the quality tier settings. Not all tiers support it.

USB Scale Integration

Brother POS supports USB scales via the Web Serial API for hands-free weight entry.

Scale Display in the Modal

When a USB scale is connected and enabled, the weight selection modal shows a live scale display at the top:

  • Current weight in large text (e.g., "3.5 g")
  • Stability indicator: "Stable" (green) when the weight is settled, "In motion" (yellow) when changing, or "OVERLOAD" (red) if exceeded
  • Calculated price for per-gram products (e.g., "= $29.75")
  • Matched preset for preset products -- if the scale weight matches a preset within 10% tolerance, it shows which preset matches (e.g., "Matches: Eighth ($30.00)")
  • A Use Scale Weight button to add the item at the current scale reading

Using the Scale

  1. Place the product on the scale.
  2. Wait for the "Stable" indicator to appear (green).
  3. Tap Use Scale Weight.
  4. The item is added to the cart at the displayed weight.

For preset products, the scale matches to the nearest preset. For per-gram products, the exact scale weight is used.

warning

The Use Scale Weight button is disabled when the scale reading is unstable, zero, or in overload. Wait for a stable reading before adding.

Scale Setup

Scale integration requires:

  • A USB scale compatible with the Web Serial API
  • The enable_scale feature flag enabled in store settings
  • Browser permission granted for serial port access

For full setup instructions, see Scale.

Cart Behavior for Weight Products

Weight Preset Products in the Cart

When a weight preset product is in the cart:

  • The line item shows the weight (e.g., "3.5g Blue Dream").
  • The + button adds another unit of the same weight (e.g., 2x 3.5g = 7g total, charged at 2x the 3.5g price).
  • The - button removes one unit.
  • To change the weight (e.g., switch from 3.5g to 7g), remove the item and add it again at the new weight.

Tiered Products in the Cart

Tiered pricing items with fixed presets show the weight as a static label. The +/- buttons are hidden unless custom weight entry is enabled for that tier. To change the weight, remove and re-add the item.

Per-Gram Products in the Cart

Per-gram products show the weight in the quantity display. The +/- buttons adjust by 0.5g increments, and you can tap the quantity to type an exact weight.

Tier Consolidation

When multiple weight items of the same product are in the cart, Brother POS may show tier consolidation information. This indicates when purchasing the items together at a larger weight preset would be cheaper than the sum of individual weights. For example, 2x 3.5g at $30 each ($60 total) vs. 1x 7g at $55.
